Driving While Intoxicated

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 by Keiandra McCray

When people hear "DWI" they assume someone was drinking and driving. But that's not always the case. Did you know that driving after taking prescription drugs is the equivalent of driving drunk? You could be charged with a DWI if you are caught driving under the influence of prescription drugs. Unfortunately, Michelle Galvan of Houston, Texas learned this the hard way. I've always known to have a designated driver if I planned on driving, but thanks to DefensiveDriving.com's driver safety course...

Three Reasons to Not Drive in Flip Flops

Monday, May 7, 2012 by Keiandra McCray

1) Constant Need For Adjustment

Everyone knows that flip flops are comfortable, but unsecured. While driving, they could easily slide down, causing you to constantly reach down or move your feet to readjust the fit. This causes you to be distracted from the road, and could cause a wreck even if you just take your eyes off the road for a split second.

2) Could Get Stuck Under Gas Pedal

What if your shoe slides off when you are trying to switch between the gas and brake pedals? What if you are...

Baby on Board

Monday, April 9, 2012 by Keiandra McCray

Recently, a woman was spotted texting and driving. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but the woman also had a 1-year old infant in her lap! She also had an unrestrained 2-year old in the back seat. The driver who spotted her immediately called police and followed her until they arrived. She was arrested and the children were handed over to CPS. The 29-year old woman admitted to having previous traffic citations for  “not having insurance, not wearing a seat belt, not having a valid driver's...

Spring Break 2012

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Keiandra McCray

What do you get when you mix a bunch of teens, alcohol, and cars? Spring Break! Imagine the chaos in South Padre Island, TX...now multiply that times 10! It was ridiculous! Fun, but ridiculous. After what I witnessed, there should be plenty of people registering for a driver safety course; myself included. The fact that there was bumper to bumper traffic anytime I left the hotel room makes it difficult to believe that I got pulled over three times. Luckily, I only received one citation, so I...

Give Us a Brake

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by Keiandra McCray

Drivers encounter construction zones any time of the day and night. While construction zones aren't always clear, there are typically many warning such as orange signs, cones, and flashing lights. Driving in constructions zones can be rather dangerous to the workers and yourself, which is why the speed limit decreases in these areas. Rocks and other debris can easily be kicked up by the vehicles that are passing by, and could damage your car or worse, injure a worker. Speeding in a construction...

Cruising to the Music

Friday, January 20, 2012 by Keiandra McCray
Most driver's don't realize the impact that music has on driver safety. A lot a young drivers like to play loud music as they drive. But what they don't realize is the loud music could be putting them and their passengers in danger. What if you are about to be in a wreck, but your music is too loud to hear the other driver's horn? The accident could possibly be avoided if you are able to hear the horn, and get out of the way. What if an emergency vehicle is going through a red light, but...Read More »

Ways to Get Out of a Ticket

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
Here are a couple of excuses people have tried to use to get out of a speeding ticket:

1) "Officer, it just seem like I was going fast because you were standing still."

2) Officer-Why were you going so fast?
Me-I'm just trying to keep up with the traffic, officer.
    Officer-I don't see any traffic.
Me: Exactly! That's how far behind I am.

3) As soon as the officer walks up, explain in a panicked voice, "I'm so glad to see you! I was just almost ran off the road by a guy in a (any make...Read More »

Is There an Age Limit on the Road?

Monday, December 12, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
I'm sure a great amount of drivers have had that impatient moment. You know the one when there is a car in front of you driving too slow for your liking. You become more an more frustrated as you realize there is not yet an opening to pass the vehicle. When the opening becomes available, you angrily honk your horn and speed around the driver, only to realize it's a senior citizen. Your heart immediately softens, but there's still that thought lingering in your head, "Isn't he/she too old too...Read More »

How I Killed Two Birds With One Stone

Friday, November 4, 2011 by Keiandra McCray

I am one of many drivers who have experienced road rage. One one occasion, I'd had a not so good day at work. I was frantically cutting in and out of traffic trying to get home and relax. I'd gotten a little more irritated when a driver was going 20 mph on a 40 mph street. I sped around him, not realizing the yellow light had turned red. As you would expect, my irritation level went up a notch when i noticed the red and blue lights whirling in my rear view. Of course I received a ticket for...Read More »

Safety Inside the Vehicle

Thursday, September 22, 2011 by Keiandra McCray

People tend to ignore the small things. But sometimes, paying attention to the minor details can prevent major problems. A lot of drivers focus or what's going on around the car while driving, but don't notice that there are also dangers inside of the vehicle. Below are a few tips to remind drivers of the importance of safety inside of the vehicle.

1) Strap up before putting the car in motion- I've noticed a lot of drivers will start pulling out of the driveway or parking spot and then put on a...

Smile, You're on the Red-light Camera!

Saturday, September 3, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
I, personally, have never liked the red light camera; and apparently, I'm not alone. In November 2010, 53.2 percent of Houston voters rejected the red-light cameras. The cameras had been used to issue well over 800,000 tickets since 2006. But before Houstonians could enjoy the freedom, a judge ruled for the cameras to be turned back on, frustrating a lot of citizens. After a series of confusing court dates and votes, city council finally voted to turn them back off. As of 12:01pm, August...Read More »

We HATE the way you Drive!

Wednesday, August 24, 2011 by Keiandra McCray

I'm almost certain that everyone has a pet peeve while on the road. There's always that one driver who makes you wonder aloud, "Who in the world gave you a driver's license?" I've conducted a survey of the things that other drivers do that are annoying. The top five reasons, along with examples, are listed below.

5) Bobbing and Weaving
The driver is in such a hurry switching lane to lane, tailgating, and cutting any and every body off without a care for any driver other than him/her self.

Driving While Fatigued

Saturday, August 13, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
Have you ever gotten into the car and started driving, and before you knew it, you were already at your destination?

You don't remember passing any of the signs or landmarks that you're familiar with, you just kind of coasted the whole way.   A lot of people drive even though they are "kind of" tired.

Even if you are only a little fatigued you shouldn't drive. Take a short nap and make sure you are well rested before driving.

Don't drive more than eight hours at a time or there is a chance that...Read More »

Safety First, Wear a Seatbelt

Wednesday, July 27, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
For some odd reason people are not very fond of seatbelts. Is it because you don't look "cool" in a seatbelt? Are you in too much of a hurry to stop for 3.5 seconds and put on your seatbelt? Or do you feel like you don't have to wear a seatbelt because you're not driving very far? I've heard some of the craziest excuses as to why people don't wear seatbelts, but the all seem invalid. You never know what can happen while you're on the road. Accidents happen and there is no way to plan for them....Read More »

Toll Way Runners

Saturday, July 23, 2011 by Keiandra McCray
You're rushing to work hoping that you won't be late, and the morning traffic isn't helping. To top it off, you get to the tollway and realize you don't have any cash. There's already a long line and you don't want to be held up any longer so you speed through the EZ Tag lane. Because you didn't have to wait in line to pay the toll, you make it to work 8 minutes earlier than usual. The next morning you sleep in for 10 extra minutes and speed through the EZ Tag lane again, hoping the cameras...Read More »

One Drink is One Too Many

Thursday, January 1, 1970 by Keiandra McCray
"I've only had one drink." "I'm perfectly fine." "I'm not going to get into an accident." These are some of the things drunk drivers tell themselves. With it being the 4th of July weekend, there will be a lot of drinking. If you plan on drinking, don't plan on driving. Accidents happen, but drunk driving is an accident that can be prevented. Many people have lost their lives due to accidents caused by drunk drivers. It's unfair to the victims, and unfair to their loved ones. Even if you have one...Read More »
