Friday, February 17, 2012 by Vanessa Clement

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, (FMCSA), allows truck drivers to continue to spend as many as 11 hours a day on the road under a final hours-of-service rule they issued in December.  They had proposed shortening the daily allowable driving time, but said "compelling scientific evidence" is needed to support the move.

FMCSA determined that the economic benefits of the current 11-hour maximum trumped the safety gains associated with limiting truckers to 10 hours on the road. Fleet...

Sharing the Road: Motorcycles

Friday, December 30, 2011 by Vanessa Clement

There are over 4 million motorcycles registered in the United States. The popularity of this mode of transportation is attributed to the low initial cost of a motorcycle, its use as a pleasure vehicle and, for some models, the good fuel efficiency. Motorcycle fatalities represent approximately five percent of all highway fatalities each year, yet motorcycles represent just two percent of all registered vehicles in the United States. One of the main reasons motorcyclists are killed in crashes is...

Friday, December 23, 2011 by Vanessa Clement

What is the purpose of a mature driver's course?
The AARP are strong advocates that seniors who drive take part in a mature driver safety course to learn how to drive age appropriate. But why is it important? Cars have changed. So have the traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver's licenses, but even the most experienced benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.

By taking one...

It's not just the teen with the cell phone we need to worry about, but also the minivan two lanes over. Unless your children were dropped off by the "Well Behaved Fairy", every parent has had a road trip with an unruly child.

Distracted driving is thought to be the cause of 80% of all crashes. Parents of young children are especially vulnerable...

If you didn't know, let me tell that Texas implemented new rules for the road on Sept 1, 2011:
  • Tow trucks have now been added to the slow down or move over laws, which require drivers to slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit, or to vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle that has emergency lights activated if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction. (House Bill 378)

Driving in the Sun

Friday, November 11, 2011 by Vanessa Clement

Glare of the sunMany suits have been brought in United States courts as a result of sun glare obliterating traffic control devices or oncoming vehicles or pedestrians from view. Multiple terms have been used to describe this situation, including disability glare, veiling glare, sun blindness, and sun dazzle. The effect is to 'wash out' the image on the retina with a bright, overwhelmingly dominant spot or pattern. Evaluation of sun glare requires factoring in latitude and longitude, road direction, weather...

Florida Traffic School

Friday, September 30, 2011 by Vanessa Clement

A common practice in the world of traffic court has been done away with.  It used to be when you got a ticket and took a driver safety course, you only had to pay a partial fine.  Back in 2009, Florida lawmakers changed a section of Florida Statute 318.15 eliminating discounts for drivers who attended traffic school.

Rick Silverman, a Tampa traffic attorney, explained that "They gave that discount to make sure the individual wasn't being punished extra on top of just paying the civil penalty,...Read More »
